Soujirou is the deadliest member of the Juppon Gatana and Shishio's right-hand man. He is known as Tenken, because his skills as a swordsman could only have been a gift from the heavens. He always has a cheerful smile on his face even when he is committing the the most ruthless of murders and seems to be completely devoid of emotion altogether. He has completely brainwashed by Shishio since he was a young boy and like Shishio he lives by the philosophy that only the strongest survive and the weak perish. The only person that he has any sort of social relationship with is Shishio's lover, Yumi Komagata who he thinks of as a big sister. Because Soujirou is careful to never show any emotion he has a huge advantage over Kenshin since Kenshin's style of fighting relies so much on reading the emotions of the opponent. However, behind the cheerful smile is a very tortured soul who, with all the crimes he has committed might not be able to suppress his true nature for much longer...

Soujirou was the illegitimate son of a prostitute. His father's family adopted him after the father died because they didn't want the family reputation tarnished. They were verbally and physically abusive towards him and all but turned him into a slave, but through it all Soujirou would just keep smiling in the hopes that they would leave him alone. Then one night he came across Shishio, who was in the middle of killing several policemen. Even though Soujirou witnessed the whole thing, Shishio said he would spare the boy in return for supplies and he was also intrigued by how Soujirou seemed almost happy to die. Soujirou provided aide to Shishio by letting him hide in the family warehouse and providing him with food and fresh bandages. Shishio talked to him about how only the strong survive while the weak perish and that if he wanted to be free of his abusive family then he needed to fight back, and even gave him a sword to do so with. Eventually, the family figured out that Soujirou was hiding Shishio from the police and became so enraged that they decided to kill him, but when they finally cornered him Soujirou snapped and murdered all of them, partially in self-defense and partially because of Shishio's influence. After that Soujirou joined Shishio and was his pupil from that day on. |
