Anji Yukyuzan
|
age: unknown
also known as: Bright King, Anji the Destroyer
animal of assosiation: none
fighting style: Futae no Kiwami (The Mastery of Two Layers)
weapon: a small sword (when he actually uses a weapon)
personality:
Anji is considered the third strongest fighter of the Juppon Gatana. He is a fallen Buddhist priest has abandoned his religious faith in his quest for strength. However, he does not share in the same level of arrogance and bloodlust as many of the other members of Shishio's group and his intentions are actually the most noble (though still twisted). In fact he tries not to take lives unless he deems it necessary or doesn't believe that the person deserves to live. At one point he even saves Misao from Usui even though she is fighting against their cause. Although Anji can ultimately be considered a good man, he hates the Meiji government and wishes to destroy it, which is why he has chosen to ally himself with Shishio. For the most part, Anji's demeanor is solemn and reserved, though there can be no doubt that he is confident in his fighting abilities. Anji is first introduced to the story when he has a chance encounter with Sanosuke (who is lost in the woods on the way to Kyoto and in need of food). They quickly learn that they have common ground (their hated for the Meiji government) and Anji agrees to teach Sanosuke his Futae no Kiwami technique. The two develop a mutual respect for each other and it is not until much later that they realize that they are fighting on opposite sides.
past:
Anji was once a kind and gentle man who worked in a Buddhist temple where he took care of a handful of orphans. However, the leader of the village that the temple was situated in wanted to destroy it so that he could receive more money from the Meiji government (note: anti-Buddhist feelings were strong in Japan during this time). Before Anji could do anything, the village leader had the temple burned to the ground with the orphans inside. Anji tried praying to his god to save the orphans whom he loved like family, but all of them still perished in the fire. Overcome with grief, he lost his faith and vowed revenge. From them on Anji hated the Meiji government and he eventually hunted down and killed the village leader and his cronies.
